Cougars come up three points short, losing second straight in Saskatoon

SASKATOON - The No. 9 ranked University of Saskatchewan Huskies held off the Mount Royal University Cougars 90-87 Saturday night on Ron and Jane Graham Centre Court at the PAC to improve to 11-5.

 

Matt Forbes blocked a Mount Royal three point attempt off of a Cougars inbound under the Saskatchewan basket with 1.5 seconds to play to seal the win and drop Mount Royal's record to 7-8.

 

The Huskies were able to jump out to a six point lead to start the fourth quarter and held on down the stretch as the teams traded long range shots in the final three minutes. The Cougars got to within a point twice in the closing minute, but Saskatchewan was able to convert on offence when it counted to keep the lead at three.

 

The Huskies outscored the Cougars 26-20 in the fourth quarter and 26-23 in the third.

 

Mount Royal got out to a quick start on Saturday night, taking a five-point lead early in the game. The Cougars would lead the entire first quarter to hold a 25-20 edge heading to the second. The Cougars extended the halftime lead to 44-38 after outscoring Huskies 19-18 in second.

 

Shane Osayande and Forbes both recorded double-doubles in the game for the Huskies. Osayande scored 23 points and grabbed 14 rebounds, while Forbes racked up 20 points and hauled in 12 rebounds, including nine on the offensive end. It was the second time this season that the two teammates have recorded a double-double in the same game.

 

Josh Ross was the leading scorer for Mount Royal with 21 points on 7-of-13 shooting. Brett Layton and Derek Wolf added another 19 and 17 points respectively. The duo also collected seven rebounds a piece for the Cougars.

 

The Huskies will host the University of Alberta Golden Bears in Saskatoon, while the Cougars return to action in Calgary when they welcome in the Trinity Western University Spartans.
