    CALGARY - The 3-12 Mount Royal Cougars took on the 12-3 Alberta Golden Bears Saturday afternoon at Kenyon Court looking to split their home series after falling to the Golden Bears in a close match last night in 5 games. The Golden Bears were too much to handle for the Cougars on this evening, winning in straight sets 25-20, 25-20, 25-20. The Booster Juice Players of the Game were Riley Friesen for the Cougars and Alex McMullin for the Golden Bears, who both lead their team in kills.

    CALGARY - Off to a strong start, things were looking good for the Mount Royal Cougars on home court. But a tenacious effort from the University of Alberta Golden Bears earned them the win on night one of a two night match up in five sets. The final scores were 23-25, 22-25, 25-15, 25-15 and 15-7. The Booster Juice Players of the game were Cougars Lightfoot and Golden Bears Sani. Both players were the leading attacker for their team. Sani with a total of 20 and Lightfoot with a total of 12. The Cougars had a total side out percentage of 56, and the Golden Bears 67. The Golden Bears team block total was 13, with the Cougars trailing close behind at 12.5
  • Cougars split weekend against TRU

    CALGARY - The Cougars turned their weekend around in the second match against the Thompson Rivers University WolfPack securing a win for a weekend split. After the first match on Friday night didn’t end in favour of the Cougars they came out hungry for their first win of the year. The Cougars took the match in four sets. The final scores were, 25-13, 19-25, 25-20 and 25-14. 
  • WolfPack win tight contest against Cougars

    CALGARY – After refuelling over the holiday break, the Thompson Rivers University WolfPack travelled to Calgary to take on the Mount Royal University Cougars. The two teams were pretty evenly matched up when looking at stats. In the end, it was the WolfPack that took the match on night one, winning three sets to one.  The final scores were 25-19, 21-25, 25-17 and 29-27.

  • Cougars losing streak extends to six after UBC sweeps the weekend

    CALGARY – UBC Thunderbirds clean sweep the weekend versus the MRU Cougars. After a strong showing on Kenyon Court Dec. 1, 2017, the Thunderbirds were able to carry the momentum into the second match on Dec. 2, 2017. The Thunderbirds took the match in three sets both nights. The final scores of the second match sets were 25-22, 21-25 and 25-21.

    CALGARY – Ringing in December the Mount Royal Cougars men’s volleyball team took on the University of British Columbia Thunderbirds on Kenyon Court. Unfortunately, the Cougars were unable to keep up in attacks and the Thunderbirds came out victorious taking the match in three straight sets. The final score of the sets were 25-20, 25-16 and 25-20.

  • Huskies earn first win of 2017-18 season with home win vs MRU

    SASKATOON – The University of Saskatchewan Huskies earned their first win of the 2017-18 Canada West men’s volleyball season with a four-set (25-23, 21-25, 27-25, 25-18) victory Friday night on Ron & Jane Centre Court at the PAC. First-year Dylan Mortensen recorded a match-high in both kills and digs with 16 and 12. Fourth-year Colin Fraser was close behind with 13 kills and nine digs. Fourth-year Tyler Schmidt lead the Cougars with 12 kills, eight digs, two assists and a service ace. With the win, the Huskies are now 1-8, while Mount Royal drops to 2-7. After trading early points, Mount Royal built the largest lead of the opening set at 13-7. The Huskies would storm back to eventually tie it at 15. The battle continued until late in the set. The Huskies secured three straight points to take the open set 25-23. Neither the Cougars or Huskies could build a large lead in the second game. The Cougars mimicked the Huskies' first set performance, scoring the final three points for the second set win, 25-21. Saskatchewan found itself in a 20-15 hole in the third set but crawled back to tie the game at 22 after a Patrick Hunchak service ace. Second-year Aidan Saladana supplied back-to-back kills to secure the win in set three, 27-25. In the final and deciding set, the Huskies built an early 13-8 lead that would provide enough breathing room the rest of the way. Saskatchewan sealed the match win with a 25-18 victory.

    SASKATOON – The University of Saskatchewan Huskies completed the weekend sweep of the Mount Royal University Cougars Saturday night on Ron & Jane Centre Court at the PAC, winning in straight sets (25-17, 25-23, 25-18) With the win, Saskatchewan’s record improves to 2-8. Mount Royal drops to 2-8. Fourth-year Colin Fraser led the Huskies with nine kills, five digs and three assists. First-year Dylan Mortensen also recorded nine kills and added three digs. For the Cougars, first-year Mitchell Newman recorded a match-high 11 kills. Fourth-year Tyler Schmidt chipped in with another seven kills. In the first set, an early 7-0 Huskie run made the score 9-4. The lead would give Saskatchewan enough breathing room and went on to win, 25-17. The second set was back and forth action, as both teams could not pull away from one another. With the score tied at 23, Fraser smashed a kill to provide a set-point opportunity for second-year CJ Gavlas, who fired off the service ace to give the Huskies the edge, 25-23. With a 12-5 Huskie lead in the third set, an impressive 10-3 run by the Cougars tied the set at 15. But Saskatchewan recovered and took over from that point. The Huskies put together an 8-0 run to seal the sweep with a 25-18 win. The Huskies will travel to Manitoba to take on the Bisons next weekend, while the Cougars return home for a weekend series against the UBC Thunderbirds. It will be the final weekend of men’s volleyball for the first half of the season.

  • Battle of the Cougars goes MRU’s way in three

    CALGARY – The Mount Royal Cougars men’s volleyball team got the monkey off their back with a solid 3-0 (25-15, 27-25, 25-23) win over the Regina Cougars on Kenyon Court. Outside hitter Tyler Schmidt scored a game-high 11 kills in the match, adding five digs and three aces for Mount Royal. Lachie Pollock followed that up with ten kills of his own. Setter Tanner Greves recorded a game-high 30 sets and seven digs in the Cougars’ win. For Regina, Brennan Goski had 11 kills in the game to match Schmidt’s numbers. Setter Jake Fleming added 25 assists and a team-high five digs in the contest. Three Cougars recorded five kills including Dalton Wolfe, Matt Aubrey and Cody Caldwell. MRU head coach Shawn Sky was pleased with the result on the second day of competition with Regina, but knows the team needs to keep improving with each match they play.
  • Mount Royal's comeback comes up short

    CALGARY -Tonight was game one of two of Cougar on Cougar action for men’s volleyball. The University of Regina Cougars took on the Mount Royal Cougars on Kenyon Court. It was Regina that came out on top winning three sets to two. The final scores were, first set 25-21 Regina, second set 25-22 Regina, third set 24-26 Mount Royal, fourth set 17-25 Mount Royal and fifth set 15-13 Regina. The Booster Juice Players of the game both lead their teams in attacks. For Regina, it was #7 Matthew Aubrey with a total of 17 out of the teams 47 attacks. For Mount Royal, it was #1 Riley Friesen with a total of 21 out of the teams 62 attacks. Regina lead in team blocks with 14 over Mount Royal’s 12, and they also had a stronger serve percentage at 0.848 compared to 0.759. Mount Royal took the lead in digs with a total of 44 compared to 38. Mount Royal’s libero, Phillips led the team in digs with a total of 12. The first set started off strong. Points went back and forth one-for-one between the two teams. Mount Royal found success in tipping over the block, finding a hole in Regina’s defense. Both teams were strong in their attacks finding a kill almost every time. Mount Royal’s strongest attacks came from none other than Schmidt, whether it came from the outside, back row or the right side. Regina’s Goski had a strong presence in the front row getting kills from both the right side and the outside. After three strong attacks in a row, Regina pulled ahead from the point for point game. At the technical timeout, Regina led 16-15 over Mount Royal. Mount Royal called a timeout at 20-17 for Regina to try to regroup. Both teams made strategic substitutions for the server trying to secure the win. Mount Royal’s Schmidt missed his serve putting the score at 24-20 for Regina. Mount Royal’s Saly had a cross-court hit landing on the line giving them one last chance to fight back, but they were unable to pick up Goski’s tip from the right side. The Regina Cougars took the first set with a final score of 25-21.
  • Cougars get first win of the season in Kelowna

    KELOWNA, B.C. – In another long five-set affair, the MRU Cougars earned a weekend split against the UBC Okanagan Heat in Kelowna. After dropping the first set, the Heat roared back in the second and third with convincing victories and looked to be in a good position to keep the momentum going on the night. The Cougars countered strong in the fourth, though, swinging the momentum well back in their own favour by taking it 25-14 and forcing yet another tie-breaking set.
