CALGARY –The Brandon Bobcats defeated the Mount Royal Cougars 3-2 (22-25, 25-16, 25-17, 16-25, 15-12) in a five-set thriller Friday night on Kenyon Court. Nikala Majewski scored a team-high 17.0 points in the victory. Mount Royal's Alex Donaghy led all scorers with 19.5 points in the match.
The Bobcats came out of the gate hot, winning eight of the game's first 12 points. The 8-4 run forced Sandra Lamb to call a Mount Royal timeout.
Brandon led 20-16 late in the set when Mount Royal finally turned it up. After tying the game at 21, Amy Gordon got on serve and won three straight points for Mount Royal. One point after Gordon's service run, the Cougars put the set away with a little tip play, taking the first set 25-22.
The Bobcats took another commanding lead at the start of the second going up 13-8 before the Cougars were forced to take a timeout. The Cougars looked disjointed in the second set and the Bobcats pounced all over their opportunities. There would be no comeback in the second set as Brandon took it 25-16 to even the match.
Brandon led 9-5 to begin the third set, while only recording a single kill. Mount Royal gave away five points off errors and dug themselves another hole to begin a set. The Bobcats extended their lead to as much a six points and kept pressing the Cougars.
Mount Royal trailed 22-15 and were forced to call another timeout. Alex Donaghy came out of the timeout with a monster kill, trying to spark her teammates. The team's traded points until Courtney Roberts put the set away with an emphatic kill, giving Brandon a 2-1 lead in the match.
The fourth set began 8-8 before Mount Royal rattled off four straight points to extend their lead to 12-8. Mount Royal extended their lead to 16-10 at the technical timeout. Each side traded points out of the technical but Mount Royal was determined to tie the match. They did just that on a Julia Kryzan kill, winning the fourth set 25-16.
Rookie Carley Davies stepped up to serve for Mount Royal to start the fifth set and looked like a seasoned veteran. Her strong service game propelled the Cougars to a 7-4 start. Brandon clawed their way back in the match, tying it 7-7.
Mount Royal led 8-7 at the fifth set switch but it was Brandon who grabbed the momentum after the stoppage. They scored five straight points to lead 12-8, forcing the Cougars to call a timeout. Unforced errors by Mount Royal set up match point for the Bobcats. After the Cougars scrambled for a couple of quick points, Courtney Roberts put the match away with a kill.
Brandon improves to 8-13 after the five-set victory, while Mount Royal drops to 7-12 with the loss.
The Cougars and Bobcats will play the second half of their weekend set tomorrow afternoon on Kenyon Court. First serve is scheduled for 4:00pm MST.
