Cougars Lose Heartbreaker in Double OT
Calgary – The Mount Royal Cougars lost 80-72 to the Brandon Bobcats in double overtime this afternoon at Kenyon Court. Cassie Cook of Brandon led all scorers with 39 points and teammate Stephanie Haynes added 12. Jordan MacLean and Danica Rybachuk scored 24 and 16 points for the Cougars.
The Cougars ran out to a big lead to start the game. They rebounded and passed well climbing out to a 26-13 lead at the end of the quarter. Brandon put up more of a fight in the second quarter as they began to anticipate the Cougar's plays and came away with a few steals to close the gap. At the half the Cougars led 39-23.
Brandon went on a 7-0 run to start the second half as the Cougars just could not handle their inside penetration. The Bobcats closed the gap to 47-46 by the end of the third quarter. BU scored early in the fourth to take their first lead of the game. From there the play went back and forth. The Cougars opened up a seven point lead for a brief period but sloppy defense let Brandon right back in tying the game at 63 and heading to overtime.
Neither team could get the offense going in the first overtime period as they each only scored five points and a second period was needed. Brandon distanced themselves opening with 7-2 run to begin the frame. The Cougar's inability to score hurt them in the end and Brandon won the game 80-72.
The loss drops Mount Royal to a record of 1-7 while Brandon improves to 2-6.
Brandon will remain in Calgary for the week before playing the Calgary Dinos on Thursday and Friday night.
The Cougars are on their way to Kamloops next weekend for two against two matchups against Thompson Rivers. Tip-off for the first game will be at 6:00pm on Friday November, 29th.
